Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to contest specific rulings from the official, following the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
