Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Cars, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.

Law enforcement state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.

The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.

Police then found numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police say preliminary tests show the substance was probably blood from a person.

"At present there remains no clue as to its source; investigators are presently not informed of any harm in relation with the event," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.

A high-ranking representative said the vandalism left him speechless and had to be solved quickly.

"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on online, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at people of foreign heritage in 2020.
